Just about every Catholic parent can agree that getting kids (especially toddlers!) to Mass on time, dressed, and ready to sit quietly is a struggle. Even the most experienced parent has had to deal with the occasional meltdown or case of the giggles.
But there’s always that one family whose incredibly well-behaved children never seem to have a problem. What’s their secret? Here’s what we found.
1) Prepare - Make sure you’re not rushed on Sunday morning. Wake up early, set clothes out the night before, and serve a healthy breakfast. On the drive to Church, ask the children to tell you what the “rules” are for behavior at Mass. Then say a prayer together asking God to prepare everyone’s hearts to be fully present at Mass.
2) Explain and Educate - The more kids know about the Mass and what is actually happening during the celebration, the better they will be able to pay attention. Read and discuss the upcoming readings each week and explain difficult words or ideas beforehand. Teach children about the different parts of the Mass and the names for objects that will be used. Tell them why we sit, stand, and kneel. Introduce them to the saints around your Church. Provide children’s missals and other books that will help them participate.
3) Sit up front - Does that sound a little scary? It will be the first few times you try it. Yet, sitting in the front row serves two purposes. Most importantly, it gives children a better view of all that is happening on the altar, but they will also be very aware that they are the example for all who sit behind them.
The Little Saint Adventures App is an innovative, high-tech form of faith-based education for children ages 3-8. With several worlds to explore, children will learn through Bible stories, games, songs, and quizzes developed by Catholic educators.
What’s in it for parents? The Little Saint Adventures App features a Parent Portal which will notify you about your child’s progress and also provide conversation starters, hands-on activity suggestions, and links to more resources.
